Richards Construction has been taken over by Todd & Jess Sutton and is registered as Richards Construction 2022 Ltd. Current directors are Chris & Richard Ellery and Todd & Jess Sutton.
Todd leads the on-site building teams with Richard and Paul Roeven, our most experienced tradesman, assisting him. Apprentice Bradley McDowell is the last year of his apprenticeship and is project managing his own sites. We have Richard Moody employed as a journeyman carpenter. MacKenzie Williams is just starting his apprenticeship and Kaelan Death has recently been employed as labourer. Todd and Richard believe that a hands-on approach with their staff means we can confidently leave them to manage projects and make on-site decisions.
Di Tasker, our part-time office administrator, is a key person in assisting the smooth running of our office procedures.
The company is currently involved in residential projects including a major renovation of a relocated villa, a new four bedroom architecturally designed house, a work & garden shed, a large garage, and a small bathroom alteration. A light commercial project involving earthquake strengthening and relining a local church is just finishing along with the fitout of offices and a staff room in a new depot building.
We get great satisfaction in working with repeat clients who come back to us to do additional projects. This means we got it right the first time and they are confident to begin further work with us. The relationship we develop with many of our clients is one of the most important parts of building our business.
By taking over taking over Richards Construction, Todd will carry on the legacy of the company’s quality trademark that has been stamped on many of Rangitikei’s building projects. Continuing the construction of traditional and contemporary new homes in the district and supporting Marton and local business development through light commercial projects, will be foremost in the ethos of the new company
Richard began Richards Construction Ltd in 1979 after he came from Auckland where he had completed his apprenticeship and worked on quality buildings in Auckland’s eastern suburbs.
Since starting Richards Construction Ltd, he has built mainly in the Rangitikei area but has gone further afield heading south to Wellington and north to Taupo, Tauranga, Rotorua and Auckland to complete a wide variety of projects including a large rest home and a multi-storied office fit-out.
Richard has worked many of these years on the tools but as the firm has grown, he has moved into management of building projects and office administration.
Richard has been an active Registered Master Builder serving as President of the Wanganui Master Builders as well as on their Executive Committee. He has entered the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition since it began and have amassed golds, silver, bronze, lifestyle awards and people’s choice awards. Four projects have received Gold Reserve awards which then enters them in the national competition, and one has gone on to win a National Award in the category of Sustainable Houses under $500,000.
One of the goals Richard has always had, was to bring apprentices into the business and mentor them through their training and into qualified tradesman status. Richard has encouraged our apprentices to enter the Apprentice of the Year awards and they have had considerable success with Todd Sutton going on to compete in the national finals in Auckland in 2019.
Richard enjoys supporting our community activities. He is a Past President of Rotary and current Vice -President of the Marton Golf Club. He is a member of the Eagles Golfing Society.
As Richard passes over the business onto Todd, he can reflect on a highly successful and rewarding career in the building industry.
Todd is a local, born and bred Martonian. He began his passion for building at Rangitikei College through different opportunities including woodwork, Building Academy and Gateway.
Todd started working for Richards Construction Ltd in 2015. Qualifying from his BCITO apprenticeship in march 2019. Being the year that he qualified, he was still eligible to compete in the Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year. Todd went on to win this competition for the Central North Island region. After winning this regional event, he went on to represent Richards Construction and Central at the nationals in Auckland.
Todd loves to be out and about in the community through sports and has enjoyed coaching and umpiring junior hockey throughout the Rangitikei. In his spare time, he enjoys playing hockey, cricket, squash and golf.
Todd is excited about working alongside Richard and Christine with Richards Construction 2022 Ltd and continue to strive high with wife Jessica to build the Rangitikei.
